70's Retrophilia is created out of passion and love for music. It was in the 70's when, as a young boy, I started to notice and appreciate music. I still remember the day my mom bought our first ever transistor radio/tape recorder and listening to the then very popular radio novela series on the AM band.
Being a kid, and naturally inquisitive, I started playing with the radio and learned how to switch channels over to the FM band. I still remember the first song I heard on the FM channel -- Carole King's "Tapestry". The melody of the music really struck me, not so much the lyrics since I was just a kid back then and couldn't relate to what she was singing about. When CD's came into the picture, one of the first cd's I bought was, you guessed it, Carole King's, and to this day I still play her music, bringing me back the memories of a free spirited childhood.
I also started collecting vinyl's, those 45's and bigger albums, in the 70's and it continued well throughout my teen years and early adulthood. I really don't subscribe to one particular type of music genre. If the melody sounds right to me I listen to it. For me, the melody of the song is the soul of music.
One can write beautiful and inspirational lyrics but if the melody is off or does not appeal to the listener, it won't be remembered. We normally remember our favorite song by humming the melody, it is that sound which registers first in the subconscious. The varying melody and different musical arangements enabled me to appreciate all types of musical genre.
The idea to create 70's Retrophilia was more accidental than intentional. I just resigned from my work as a regular employee and decided to go back to freelance web designing. My friend Maria ( of www.kalesanimaria.com ), who is also a freelance web developer encouraged me to create a web site which will not only be a source of income but also become a venue to practice my web design skills and learn new technology and tools for web design and development while I look for new clients.
But having the drive and creating an actual web site is daunting not to mention mind boggling. I didn't know where to start because there are so many web sites out there, what else can you offer your readers? By this time, Murty, another friend of mine and also a music afficionado, gave me some advice and directed me to test the waters by creating a lens on Squidoo. So I started to create my first Squidoo lens ( www.squidoo.com/webbyman ) in October [2006] with 70's music as the focus. Music of the 70's because it suddenly hit me, that was the time I started to develop a passion for music.
The explosion and evolution of Rock n' Roll music during the 70's is the best thing that ever happened in the music industry. Other eras like the 50's, 60's and beyond the 70's are all good and cool, but for me, the 70's is THE most amazing era, not only because of childhood experiences, but also because of the development of different styles in rock n roll, leading to the explosion of this new genre.
My 70's music lens continue to be one of the most visited sites on squidoo.com and the feedback I've been getting from visitors led me to believe that I am indeed on the right track with this one. It was the defining moment for me. I immediately went back to the drawing board and started my full-pledged web site.
70's Retrophilia is born.
I hope this web site will provide an insight to the younger generation and help them gain a continuing appreciation of music from the 70's. I continue to work on features and injecting relevant topics covering the artists of this great music decade. Who knows, if i haven't developed debilitating carpal tunnel yet, this web site might just evolve to embrace other dool music decades [ha ha]!
Thanks for your time. Enjoy!
